The Story Behind Our Kid- and Pet-Friendly Rugs

Hand-made rugs are beautiful to look at, but we firmly believe they should also be a functional part of your home too. They need to be able to stand up to the comings and goings of life. It is true that some rugs are more hardwearing than others, but even if you’ve got a young family and pets running around, you can still find one that’s up to the job and looks great. A rug is also just generally a welcome addition to a home. Adding one to a room is the perfect way to absorb noise and warm up a space, qualities anyone can appreciate.

We really understand the importance of kid and pet-friendly rugs at Enkay. Our founder, Asha, is a mother herself and there are plenty of parents (and pet parents) on our team too. So, right from the get-go we wanted to make sure that a big part of our range was fit for family living. If you’re browsing through our collections and wondering which rugs are best for families and kids, there are two easy-to-spot indications. For a start, we specifically call it out in the description of the rug itself with an icon, and we also indicate whether each one is more suited to high or low-traffic areas.

Let’s talk fibers. For a start, wool is actually a naturally stain-resistant and resilient material, so many of our rugs are more kid-friendly than you may expect. You can also consider one of our PET or polyester rugs. Like wool, these materials are incredibly hard-wearing – that’s why we use them in our indoor-outdoor designs like Lekka. They’re easy to care for and tough enough to stand up to nearly anything. Another practical factor to bear in mind when choosing rugs for busy homes is the pile depth. This refers to how long the yarn is on the surface of the finished design, ranging from compact knotted finishes to low and high piles. As a rule of thumb, the shorter the pile, the more durable the rug – so a design like Sayat or Raksha would be ideal.

The last factor to talk about when considering rugs for busy homes is care and cleaning. No matter which fiber or construction you choose, this plays a big role in keeping your purchase looking great for years to come. If you catch any spills before they set in, for example, you can quickly prevent any lasting stains. You’ll also want to make sure you clean your rug regularly to stop any surface dirt working its way deeper into the fibers over time. If you want to know more, our rug care guide has detailed info on this topic.

When it comes to finding a kid- and pet-friendly rug at Enkay, you’ll see that there are plenty more options than you may have first realized. If you check off a few basics around fiber and construction, you’re off to a great start. But no matter what your family looks like, there’s a perfect rug out there just waiting for you.
